Estimating the Heating Value of Coals Based on the Composition

  • Published:
Power Technology and Engineering Aims and scope

For a wide population of coals, the heating value can be estimated based on the composition using well-known calculation formulas with an error comparable to a total error observed during experimental measurement of the heating value and heat caused by the error of determining the elemental composition. In a number of instances, the difference between the calculated and experimental values for an individual sample is much greater and is caused by the dependence of the result on the coal characteristics unaccounted for in the calculation models. The calculated and experimental heating values (dry ash free basis) strongly depend on the ash content of the coal. The difference in the binding energy of the elements in coals having varying degrees of coalification and petrographic composition plays a relatively weak role.
