Results from acoustic and aerodynamic tests of a multistage noise muffler with different plate thicknesses built according to original recommendations are reported. The locations of the stages of the muffler are determined by mathematical modelling based on their having minimal aerodynamic drag and the lengths of the stages with different plate thicknesses are determined by minimizing the cost. The tests show that the muffler has high acoustic efficiency and low aerodynamic drag. The approaches considered here have been used in developing two-stage plate mufflers for a thermal power plant in Moscow.
