Notes

  1. For some minor modifications, see Orléan and Diaz-Bone 2013.

  2. As Desrosières (2014: 218f.) has pointed out, two major streams of heterodox economic thought in France, namely the convention and the regulation approach, have been fed by former students of Ecole Polytechnique. Following his account, nine out of ten heterodox economists are polytechniciens; most of them, including André Orléan, have then entered Ecole Nationale de la Statistique et de l'Administration Economique (ENSAE). Born in 1950, André Orléan did not have the chance to meet Pierre Bourdieu teaching at ENSAE between 1963 and 1966. Unlike some colleagues of an earlier generation more indebted to Bourdieu’s influence, his approach has been formed by more diverse sources.

  3. See Hillebrandt (2009: 156ff.) for a similar discussion, and a different conclusion. Questioning the premise that logics of exchange, whether based on barter or on money, are mutually exclusive, he turns to exploring their “simultaneity” in practice.

  4. See Zelizer (1994) or Hedenus (2014) for bringing this perspective to empirical study on the use of money.

  5. See Godechot (2011) on the history of EHESS which is particularly instructive of the question of “de-economizing economics” (Alain Touraine).

  6. See Boltanski and Thévenot (2006), Karpik (2010), Stark (2009), or Lamont (2012) for similar invitations to sociological and socio-economic inquiry.
