Abstract
Cocona (Solanum sessiliflorum Dunal) is a delicious fruit with numerous health-related properties. This fruit is cultivated throughout the Amazon basin. It originated in the upper Amazon region in Colombia, Brazil, Peru and Venezuela. Flowers are actinomorphic and pedunculate. Cocona has long style and short style flowers. Flowering occurs continuously throughout the year. Stem bifurcation marks the transition from vegetative to reproductive stage. Pollen is round-shaped and 20 µm wide. The plant is autogamous with frequent allogamy. Insect pollination is mediated mainly by bees. Fruit development has been divided into four stages namely, light green, dark green, yellow-green and dark orange. Fruit growth is characterized by a sigmoid growth type. Cocona fruits are climacteric, but also non-climacteric depending on genotype and cultivar. This plant has been crossed with other Solanum species producing viable offspring. Breeding programs have crossed several varieties with different fruit shapes. This paper aims to review flower morphology, flowering, pollen physiology, autogamy and allogamy, insect pollination, fruit development, fruit morphology, seed germination, hybridization, health-related properties, genetic diversity and chromosome number in cocona.
