The effect of alkali treatment on the breakdown process and some surface characteristics of machined glass disks of lead-silicate glasses C87-2 and C78-4 was investigated. It is shown that the interaction of these glasses with barium hydroxide effects the removal of silicic acid from the gel surface, which in turn improves the wettability by water and the optical transparency of the glasses. In the manufacture technology of electro- vacuum devices, where lead-silicate glasses are used, it is proposed that the glasses be washed with barite water for fast coagulation of silica gel, which excludes the appearance of foreign particles on the surface of the investigated glasses.
