The effect of a burnable additive in the form of petroleum coke and brown coal [lignite] on the properties of lightweight thermal insulation was examined. It is shown that the high ash content of coal and the heightened content of low-melting oxides in the ash activates the sintering process. An aluminum-silicate lightweight material with the optimal combination of physical and technical properties, such as the density, strength, and thermal conductivity, can be obtained by matching the filler, clay binder, and temperature by the trial-and-error method.
