The effect of modification of polyacrylonitrile fiber by phosphorus-containing fire retardants on the structure, properties, and thermal transformations of the polymer was studied. Modifiers were shown to enhance structuring during pyrolysis of the fiber and to lead to higher coke yields, changes in the composition of the pyrolysis products, and suppression of burning.
