We have studied the dependence of the mechanical properties of processed needlepunched materials, obtained from polyester and bicomponent fiber blends of different compositions, on variation in the porosity. We propose a mechanism for failure of needlepunched materials on stretching and provide a rationale for a processing method for such materials. We present the factors determining the increase in strength, and propose an additional strength control factor associated with mobility of the fibers.
