The original article requires the following corrections and a clarification:

• on page 107, in Section 3.1, footnote 3, there is no error here, but for clarity we would propose, after:

‘… we have used a factor 4x10⁸ ph/erg’ adding:

‘, and then multiplied by 10⁴ to yield values in photon m^-2 s^-1’;

• on pages 108 and 109, in Table 1, the units of the column ‘Source total flux’ should be stated as ‘ph m⁻² s⁻¹’, not ‘ph cm⁻² s⁻¹’;

• on page 128, in Appendix A, following Equation A.3, the units of F_total should be specified, and the units of F_bX and F_bN should be corrected, i.e. the text should read:

‘…F_total is the total X-ray flux from the pulsar (ph m^-2 s^-1), F_bX is the diffuse X-ray background flux from the sky (ph m⁻² s⁻¹ sr⁻¹) and F_bN is the flux due to the cosmic-ray background and other sources of internal detector noise (ct m⁻² s⁻¹)’.

The numerical values of flux, and other values calculated from them, are not affected.
