Lidia Castagneto-Gissey (lidia.castagnetogissey@uniroma1.it) received her MD degree at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Rome and completed her residency in General Surgery and PhD in Advanced Surgical Techniques at Sapienza University of Rome.

She is presently working as a Researcher in General Surgery at the Department of Surgery of Sapienza University in Rome, Italy.

Her clinical practice mainly consists of minimally invasive surgical procedures in the field of bariatric/metabolic, upper GI, colorectal and hernia surgery. Beyond practicing general surgery, she has contributed to several peer-reviewed publications specifically regarding bariatric and metabolic surgery.

She has also performed several innovative experimental surgical procedures in order to better comprehend the effects of bariatric/metabolic surgery on obesity-related comorbidities. She is involved in several ongoing studies, including the evaluation of predictive factors for Barrett’s esophagus after sleeve gastrectomy, further research on gut molecular mechanisms implicated in the pathophysiology of insulin resistance and the establishment of a liquid biopsy test model for a highly accurate diagnosis of NAFLD and liver fibrosis in subjects with obesity.

She is an active member of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO), Italian Society of Obesity Surgery (SICOb), European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), The Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons Society (TUGS), and American College of Surgeons (ACS).
