The arabinogalactan AG-Ften of molecular mass 40 kDa consisting of galactose and arabinose in a 25:10.6 ratio was isolated from the aerial part of Ferula tenuisecta. AG-Ften was found to consist of D-galactopyranoses bound by β-1,6-glycoside bonds as the main chain and a side chain of α-arabinose, β-galactose, and 4-O-methylglucuronic acid by using methylation, GC, GC-MS, and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The F. tenuisecta polysaccharides exhibited bifidogenic activity.
