A Novel Tannin Compound from the Mangrove Plant of Acanthus ilicifolius

A novel tannin compound, 4-(4,5-dihydroxy-3-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxybenzoyloxy)-6-(hydroxymethyl)-tetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-yloxy)-3-methoxybenzoic acid (1), along with three known compounds, vanillic acid (2), syringate (3), and acteoside (4), were isolated from the whole herb of the mangrove plant of Acanthus ilicifolius. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analyses (IR, Q-TOF MS, 1D and 2D NMR) and by comparison with those reported. Compound 1 was evaluated for its cytotoxic activity by MTT method.
