Structural Characteristics and Anticancer Activity of Water-Soluble Polysaccharides from Vietnamese Brown Algae Sargassum microcystum and S. serratum

  • Published:
Chemistry of Natural Compounds Aims and scope

The composition of water-soluble polysaccharides (fucoidans and laminarans) from the two Vietnamese brown algae Sargassum microcystum and S. serratum was investigated. It was found that S. microcystum produced fucoidan and laminaran with predominance of the latter; S. serratum, only fucoidan. The fucoidans were sulfated galactofucans and a sulfated and acetylated heteropolysaccharide of complicated structure. The laminaran had a main chain of 1,3-bound β-D-glucose residues with single branches on C6 (ratio of 1,3:1,6 bonds = 4:1). The sulfates occupied the 2-, 4-, and 6-positions in the obtained sulfated laminaran derivative. A study of the biological activities of all obtained polysaccharides showed a lack of cytotoxicity and low activity against RPMI-7951 human melanoma cells with significantly more pronounced and selective activity against HuTu-80 human duodenum adenocarcinoma cells.
