Proanthocyanidins from Seeds of Fraxinus americana

Previously, several phenolic compounds were isolated from seeds of Fraxinus americana L. (Oleaceae) and characterized structurally [1, 2]. In continuation of studies of proanthocyanidins from seeds of this plant, we isolated two trimeric proanthocyanidins 1 and 2 [(–)-epigallocatechin-(4β-8)-(–)-epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate-(4β-8)-(–)-epigallocatechin (1, taraninin) and (–)-epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate-(4β-8)-(–)-epigallocatechin-(4β-8)-(+)-catechin (2)] from the n-BuOH extract of the aqueous Me2CO extract using column chromatography over microcrystalline cellulose followed by gel filtration over Sephadex LH-20.
