Cytotoxic Metabolites from the Roots of Ranunculus ternatus

  • Published:
Chemistry of Natural Compounds Aims and scope

Ranunculus ternatus Thunb. (Ranunculaceae family) is widely distributed in the Henan Province of China. The root of this plant is used to treat tuberculosis, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis in traditional Chinese medicine. To characterize cytotoxic constituents from the roots of Ranunculus ternatus, we isolated a new isoflavonoid, ternatin A (1), together with three known flavonoids, namely, kayaflavone (2), mutabilein (3), and 7,3′-dihydroxyl-5′-methoxyisoflavone (4), from an ethanol extract of R. ternatus roots. The chemical structures were elucidated by detailed spectroscopic analyses based on NMR and MS data. The cytotoxic activity of the compounds was also evaluated.
