Structural Study of the DyNi1-xCuxAl System

Abstract

The pseudo-ternary series DyNi1 - xCuxAl was studied by means of microprobe experiment and X-ray powder diffraction. Structure parameters exhibit a sudden discontinuity between x=0.3 and 0.4. This effect is explained on the basis of a possible difference in strengths of intra- and inter-planar bonds. Comparison with Er-based series and other RTX compounds leads to the idea of “forbidden” value of the c/a ratio in these compounds.
