Performance characteristic of screw extruders used for the production of polymeric articles

  • Published:
Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Aims and scope

The flow-rate/pressure curve of a screw press with its effective members operating in reverse (the screw is fixed, and the wall of the cylinder is moving) is determined. A rheologic model of a viscoelastic medium is used for the analysis. A relationship is derived for determination of the bulk flow rate of the melt of a viscoelastic polymer in the screw channel with an appropriate pressure gradient. Comparison of experimental and computed data indicated their good agreement; this enables us to recommend the relationship in question for the analysis and design of extrusion equipment.
