Synthesis of Mixed Zinc and Iron Oxides and Investigation of their Catalytic Activity for Hydrothermal Refining of Heavy Oil

Chemistry and Technology of Fuels and Oils Aims and scope

The effect of the molar ratio of Zn2+/Fe3+ cations in the precursors of the double hydroxides on the structure of mixed-phase Zn–Fe oxides was established. The amount of complex oxides ZnFe2O4 with an isomorphic spinel structure in the Zn–Fe mixed oxide composition, consisting of ZnO and Fe3O4, decreases with increase in the ratio of metal cations from 1:1 to 1:4. With increase of the specific surface area from 27.075 to 34.556 m2/g the pore diameters remain constant at 23.8 nm. The results from investigations of the effect of the composition and structure of the mixed Zn–Fe oxides on the component composition of heavy naphthenic aromatic-based oil during its refining in a hydrothermal fluid at 380°С and 22 MPa are presented. The largest increase in the content of saturated hydrocarbons against the background of appreciable decrease in the amount of asphaltenes is typical of oil hydrothermally converted in the presence of the mixed Zn-Fe oxides (1:4), and the content of C10–С14 here is increased.
