Blood Level Sensor Based on Digital Video Analyzer for Autotransfusion Devices

  • Published:
Biomedical Engineering Aims and scope

Results of studies of an original blood level sensor designed for use in an apparatus for intraoperative blood autotransfusion and tested in conjunction with a classical (photoelectric) sensor in the Transfel device from the Scientific Technical Center ELINS are described. The principle of operation of the sensor is based on the definition of red blood cell boundaries in a separating bell, which allows the highest possible hematocrit level in the final product. Internal sensor circuitry, algorithm, and the results of its tests (obtained HTC > 60%) are presented. Disposable sets with 125- and 225-ml Latham-type bells were used. In the Appendix, the main characteristics of the Transfel autotransfusion device are presented.
