The results of development work on dispersion type fuel rods, whose meat, containing granules of a uranium-molybdenum alloy in a matrix of special zirconium alloys, possesses heightened uranium capacity as well as high-temperature strength and resistance to emergency situations, are presented. The fuel rods were fabricated by the capillary impregnation method; in the course of fabrication a controlled porosity equal to 15–18% was created in the core to compensate for swelling. Material science investigations of an experimental batch of fuel rods tested in the MIR reactor up to burnup 60 MW·day/kg at significant thermal loads confirmed their satisfactory performance.
