Calculated 137Cs Ingress into Groundwater via the Aeration Zone at the Demenka Test Site as a Result of the Accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant

Investigations conducted in Bryansk Region after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant attest that 137Cs was observed just 10 years later not only in the first aquifer from the ground surface but also at a considerable depth from it. A migration profile model was developed in the DHI Feflow software environment (Denmark) in order to make an assessment of the rapid migration. This profile model aided in finding an explanation for the rapid migration of 137C from the ground surface and assessing possible mechanisms for the accelerated ingress of pollution into groundwater.
