Purification of Uranium-Plutonium Extract of VVER-1000 Spent Nuclear Fuel from Fission Products by Liquid Chromatography

  • Published:
Atomic Energy Aims and scope

The purification of VVER-1000 uranium-plutonium extract from fission products by liquid chromatography was tested. The process was conducted in a liquid chromatography column filled with silica gel whose pores were impregnated with nitric acid at concentration 1 mol/L. The purification of the uranium-plutonium extract was performed in two stages. The highest purification factors were obtained from 154Eu – 2500 and 137Cs – 3·104. A high purification factor of 12 was obtained for 241Am. The efficacy of purification of the extract from the indicated fission products was observed for extract flow/water solution ratio equal to at least 40.
