Effect of annealing on microcrack propagation in irradiated samples of corrosion-resistant steel

  • Published:
Atomic Energy Aims and scope

The results of a study of the kinetics of nucleation and propagation of microcracks in 0Kh16N15M3B steel samples annealed at 650 °C and then irradiated in a reactor to neutron fluence 1021 cm–2 at 100 °C and samples irradiated without pre-annealing are presented. Using the pseudostereo method of electron microscopy, a qualitative analysis is made of the stress state of regions of the material which are close to the tip of a microcrack. The critical aperture of the microcracks is measured for the first time. A previous suggestion that the local regions of the material in a zone ahead of the microcrack tip, where tensile stresses predominated, undergo a transition into an amorphous state is confirmed.
