Neutron Energy Distribution in a Nuclear Reactor Taking Account of the Finiteness of the Neutron Lifetime

  • Published:
Atomic Energy Aims and scope

Abstract

Since the neutron lifetime is finite, an equilibrium state is not reached between neutrons and moderator nuclei. Correspondingly, an equilibrium distribution is not established. Explicit expressions for the lifetime of neutrons in a reactor are used. A single stationary nonequilibrium neutron energy distribution for the entire energy range is obtained. The qualitative behavior of the distribution obtained agrees with the measured values of this quantity.
