Problems with Root-Mean-Square Values of the Magnetic Field of Ap Stars. I.

  • Published:
Astrophysics Aims and scope

An analysis of the root-mean-square values <Bs> of the magnetic fields of chemically peculiar stars shows that their application is limited because of their extremely low accuracy. These data can be used in statistical studies only for high, medium, or low magnetic fields. It is improbable that the method can be improved by simple methods. The best way of determining the mean surface values of a magnetic field is by simulation (modeling).
