Galaxies with Polar Structures at z > 0.1

  • Published:
Astrophysics Aims and scope

A list of 21 galaxies with polar structures (rings, disks) at a mean red shift of z ≈ 0.15 is constructed from data in the SDSS survey. The selected objects are bright galaxies that are comparable in luminosity and size with the Milky Way. It is shown that in terms of the combined characteristics (integral color index, size of polar structures, angle between the central galaxy and the polar ring), the distant objects are similar to nearby galaxies of this type. Detection of distant galaxies with polar rings is very strongly influenced by observational selection, so the actual number of these objects in the region of the SDSS survey may be many times greater than we have found.
