Notes

  1. Krauss’ interest here was more in celebrating exotic folkloric spectacle than in understanding identity and mental turmoil. His final impression was the following: “The majority of transvestites can be equated with the strange nature-enthusiasts, walking bareheaded and barefoot, long hair and long nails on fingers and toes, dressed in short hairshirts with a gray cord wound around the waist, from time to time down the most visited promenades. They want to attract public attention and cause a stir. Often they are jokers, hectic during the day, electric at night, not always and everywhere, of course, and Dr. Hirschfeld discusses in great detail the many other motives and occasions for changing clothes” (ibid.).

  2. Hirschfeld also wrote a Sittengeschichte (of WW1) and in 1912 he too released an illustrierter Teil to Die Transvestiten.
