Notes

  1. Society meets the needs of the elderly in several ways, many of which may be relatively similar across western societies, although their names may differ. In the US, assisted living refers to a residential community for individuals, akin to college-dormitory living in a room or suite, with common areas for all residents. The need for some daily care is provided to the residents (e.g., meals, medications, housekeeping). A continuing care retirement community or CCRC refers to a community in which the unfolding needs of the elderly are met within a single complex from little, if any (independent living in one’s home or in an apartment or cottage on the CCRC’s premises), to assisted living, to nursing home care, to end-of-life care. The CCRC provides or facilitates the provision of all necessary services at every level of care.
