Abstract

Physical training targeted toward a sustained increase in physical activity is an important option for treatment of patients with chronic lung diseases. Even for outpatient training programs, improvements in physical capacity and quality of life could be shown for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary hypertension, or lung carcinoma. To achieve the long-term effects of exercise therapy, participation in outpatient lung sports groups appears beneficial. The medical requirements for participants with different chronic lung diseases will be discussed, as will monitoring during training periods. Nationwide establishment of outpatient lung sports groups appears to be a realistic approach to ensure close-to-home realization of exercise therapy for patients with chronic lung diseases.
