Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major health problem with increasing prevalence worldwide that is associated with a sedentary lifestyle, overweight and a tripling of sugar consumption over the last 50 years. This metabolic disease is associated with various comorbidities. There is increasing data about the effects of DM on the lung; however, this is rarely taken into account in clinical practice. The article gives a brief overview of the diagnosis and treatment of the distinct forms of DM for the pneumologist. The influence of diabetes on lung function and imaging as well as important interactions with pulmonary diseases are presented.
