Abstract

Smoking cessation represents one of the most important measures of primary prevention in respiratory medicine. Unfortunately, it is not well-established in the daily routine. Ideally, smokers should be regularly asked about their smoking habits and they should be motivated to stop smoking in a medical consultation. If there is consent to stop smoking, a combination of non-pharmaceutical and pharmaceutical treatment options has been shown to be the most promising approach for achieving long-term abstinence.
