Abstract
Presently, pneumonia is the major cause of death by an infectious disease and will also be in the future. Modern antibiotic and organ replacement therapies cannot prevent the increase of patients with pneumonia who need palliative treatment. Given the patient’s will the decision in favor of a reasonable therapy target for a patient with severe pneumonia depends on the judgment of the physician in charge. The integration of palliative medicine is helpful to develop the process, to determine the limitations of a medical treatment at the end of life and to create a safe setting for patients and their families by realizing effective symptom control.
