Abstract
Scuba diving has become a popular leisure sport. The change in ambient conditions with the necessity to breathe compressed air from the scuba equipment requires that the fitness to dive be assessed. This is particularly true when diving with pre-existing medical conditions. This article provides an overview of possible complications and the physical and psychological prerequisites to dive. Furthermore, first aid treatment in case of decompression sickness and measures to prevent diving accidents are described.
