Dear Dr. Nakata,

Thank you for your very interesting expert opinion. I concur with your opinion for the most part. In particular, ultrasound is expected to become an indispensable modality for diagnosis of the pelvic floor muscles, which is your area of expertise, even at the screening level. On the other hand, I think we can all agree that the priority of ultrasound in screening for gynecological cancers is not high at the present time. As you point out, we should ask medical device manufacturers to develop general equipment that will also be useful for general gynecological checkups, and we should conduct research to that end.

It should be noted that the scope of the present Editorial is limited to general gynecological checkups. There is no doubt that ultrasound is very useful in other areas of gynecology, e.g., mass fetal screening in obstetrics and, more recently, transperineal ultrasound for predicting labor progress, as well as point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in emergency gynecology. I think we will have an even greater obligation going forward to raise awareness of ultrasound that can be used in everyday clinical practice. We plan to publish reviews by experts as part of a feature on POCUS in the field of gynecology in this year's Journal of Medical Ultrasonics. We will look forward to hearing your opinions.
