Abstract

Background/Objective

Occupational therapy (OT) and physical therapy (PT) play essential roles in improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities or injuries. However, studies have indicated insufficient knowledge about these professions among healthcare professionals (HCPs) and the general public, which can potentially affect patient outcomes. This cross-sectional study aims to compare the knowledge of OT and PT between HCPs and the general public in Saudi Arabia.

Methods

A total of 752 participants, including 480 HCPs and 272 members of the general public, completed an online survey. The survey consisted of questions related to the roles and functions of OT and PT.

Results

The findings revealed limited knowledge about OT and PT in both groups, with HCPs demonstrating slightly better understanding compared to the general public. However, the differences between the two groups were not significant. Furthermore, most participants were unable to differentiate between OT and PT.

Conclusion

This study highlights the need for increased education and awareness regarding the roles and functions of OT and PT in Saudi Arabia. Enhancing knowledge in these areas could lead to improved patient outcomes and a higher quality of life for individuals with disabilities or injuries. Strategies such as providing in-service training and continuing education programs for HCPs, as well as implementing public awareness campaigns, should be considered to address the knowledge gaps and promote understanding of OT and PT among healthcare professionals and the general public.
