Renal cell carcinoma with metastasis to the pancreas: a case report and literature review

Summary

BACKGROUND: The pancreas is a rare site for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) metastases, which tend to develop many years after the primary tumor has been diagnosed and treated. An incidence of 1–3% has been reported. METHODS: We report a 52-year-old patient whose metastases to the pancreas were discovered by chance 8 years after tumor nephrectomy. RESULTS: After a pancreas left resection and splenectomy, histology demonstrated a renal cell carcinoma. CONCLUSIONS: Careful long-term follow-up is essential due to late development (8 years) of these metastases, and when they occur, radical surgery is of great importance for the prognosis.

Zusammenfassung

GRUNDLAGEN: Das Pankreas ist ein ungewöhnlicher Ort von Nierenzellkarzinommetastasen. Die Inzidenz wird mit 1–3 % angegeben. Typisch ist ein langes Zeitintervall zwischen Primärtumor und Metastasierung. METHODIK: Wir berichten über einen 52-jährigen Patienten, in dem die Metastasierung in das Pankreas acht Jahre nach Tumornephrektomie auftrat. ERGEBNISSE: Eine Pankreaslinksresektion mit Splenektomie wurde durchgeführt. Der operative und postoperative Verlauf waren komplikationslos. Die Histologie zeigte eine Metastase nach Nierenzellkarzinom. SCHLUSSFOLGERUNGEN: Die effektivste Behandlung ist die radikale chirurgische Therapie. Die Prognose ist besser als bei primären Pankreasneoplasien. Da das Metastasierungsintervall lange ist und die Patienten oft asymptomatisch sind, ergibt sich die Notwendigkeit einer langfristigen und sorgfältigen Nachbeobachtung.
