Summary
BACKGROUND: Although statistical methods constitute an important instrument in surgical research, their strengths and shortcomings are not as widely understood as could be desired. METHODS: This article aims to present a review of statistical methods that are typically applied in surgical research together with their properties and constraints. RESULTS: Statistical concepts and frequent misleading perceptions are described. CONCLUSIONS: Considerable efforts on the part of surgeons and statisticians are necessary in order to improve the understanding of statistical methods.
