The Kyoto 2020 Commitment for Global Promotion of Understanding and Reducing Landslide Disaster Risk (Kyoto Landslide Commitment 2020: KLC2020)—a Commitment to the ISDR-ICL Sendai Partnerships 2015–2025, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030, the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals, the New Urban Agenda, and the Paris Climate Agreement—was launched on 5 November 2021 together with 90 signatories (Sassa 2021). The KLC2020 established a Secretariat of the Kyoto Landslide Commitment within the ICL Secretariat in Kyoto, Japan, at the same time. The KLC2020 Secretariat examined potential new mechanisms/infrastructures to develop KLC2020. As a result, a new open access book focusing on practical applications of landslide research and technology for the benefit of society was planned for the success of the KLC2020. The KLC2020 Secretariat together with the WLF5 organizing committee expects that “Launching Declaration of the ICL Open Access Book Series for KLC2020” will be adopted by panelists and participants on the floor at the end of the high-level panel discussion “Review of KLC2020 and the way forward” at the National Kyoto International Conference Center on 3 November 2021.
Outline of the open access book series Progress in Landslide Research and Technology
The new open access book series of the International Consortium of Landslides (ICL) is to be founded in November 2021 with the first issue targeted for publication in 2022. The International Consortium on Landslides founded the Landslides Journal of the International Consortium on Landslides in 2003 (the first issue was published in 2004). A comparison of both publications is shown in Table 1.
The book Progress in Landslide Research and Technology publishes original articles for practice and society, such as practical applications of new models, new equipment, investigation reports, teaching tools, and landslide reports, while the Journal Landslides publishes original research. The electronic version of these books will be open access, namely they can be downloaded free of charge. The publication of the books will require a book processing charge, while publication for the Journal Landslides is free. Two issues of the book with 400–500 pages per issue are expected to be published each year, while the journal with 250–350 pages per issue is published on a monthly basis. Page size and the number of columns are the same in both publications.
Style of book series
The new book series will be a journal-style book, published by Springer. Namely, each issue includes the volume and issue number and the publication year as shown in Fig. 1. The title of the book series is Progress in Landslide Research and Technology. Thus, the title of each issue of the book series will be “Progress in Landslide Research and Technology, Volume 1 Issue number, 2022,” “Progress in Landslide Research and Technology, Volume 2 Issue number, 2023,” etc. ISSN for the new book series was assigned for print version and electronic version in 2021 as follows:
Print-ISSN:2731–3794, e-book-ISSN: 2731–3808.
Categories of the book series
The page number of one article is limited in the Journal Landslides because there is no publication fee. In contrast, the maximum page number of one article in the book series is flexible. Articles can be 20–40 pages and even longer articles are acceptable. There are seven categories in the book series, as summarized below.

Original articles (minimum 8 pages): original articles reporting progress of landslide research and technology.

2.
Review articles (minimum 8 pages): review of landslide research and technology in a thematic area of landslides. A review article integrating a series of research and technology of the author or its group.

3.
IPL/WCoE/Kyoto Commitment activities (minimum 8 pages): progress or achievements of the projects of the International Programme on Landslides (IPL) and the World Centres of Excellence on Landslide Risk Reduction (WCoEs), and Kyoto Landslide Commitment.

4.
Teaching tools with extras online (minimum 8 pages): user-friendly teaching tools with extras (i.e., photos, illustration, videos, guidelines, and manuals) available online to fill the gap between the available level of science and technologies and the practical use in the society.

5.
Technical note and case studies (minimum 4 pages): technical note and case studies on landslides and landslide disaster risk reduction practice.

6.
World Landslide Reports (2–4 pages): landslide reports from landslide-prone developing countries and urbanizing areas of the developed countries from around the world. Articles in this category will not have a processing charge, but the number of reports will be limited to approximately 10 per issue.

7.
Introduction of KLC2020 Official Promoters (1–3 pages): KLC2020 Official Promoters are eligible for this category. The introduction of the official promoters is published throughout the year.
