Abstract
The sensor-based phenotyping and measurement of early plant development has major advantages against conventional, visual plant counting and growth scoring. With this technology it is possible to distinguish between a high field emergence and subsequent mortality, for example because of frost or pest damage, and low field emergence. Digital data storage makes it possible to retroactively find reasons for plant losses or depressions during leaf area development.
In the paper a field robot is presented, which is used for field emergence counting and phenotyping of the early plant development of sugar beet plants. The low measurement height of the ground-based vehicle allows a high image resolution which makes it possible to count plants at the earliest stages of field emergence, to distinguish plant losses before and after emergence as well as to analyze early leaf development on an individual plant basis. With a 3D measurement approach a method for modelling and measuring 3D leaf area and other morphological leaf parameters is presented. An outlook shows the further development to classify between crop and weed plants with subsequent mechanical weed management.
