Summary
The oasis Balad Seet is located in a small valley of the Al-Hajar mountain range of Oman and surrounded by limestone with up to 1200 m high cliffs. It is a typical core oasis with a central settlement on a rocky outcrop at the upper end of six surrounding terrace systems. An elaborate spring irrigation system conveys the water to the crops land and orchards. A total of 2690 date palms (Phoenix dactylifera L.) comprising 16 varieties cover 8.8 ha of man-made terraced land. The palm groves are typical agroforestry systems in which the date palms are interplanted with different fruits like banana (Musa x paradisiaca L.), lime (Citrus aurantiifolia [L.] Swingle), papaya (Carica papaya L.) and some annual crops. In total 15 different fruit species and six under-utilized fruit species were identified. All fruits are consumed by the households and none of them are sold outside the oasis. In recent years the number of lime trees in the oasis has declined by approximately 75% due to the rapid spread of the witches broom disease (Crinipellis perniciosa [Stahel] Singer).
