Abstract:
In the “Children’s area” in a Belgian hospital, the Cancer and Psychology organisation offers a welcome area for families visiting a relative suffering from cancer. Children and teenagers, introduced by a familiar adult, are welcomed by psychologists so they can have a break, relax and take the opportunity to express their feelings about the upsetting illness and its disruptive effects. They may listen to questions asked by adults, their doubts and their wish to protect the young ones. We attempt to create the best conditions for sharing our thoughts with children and teenagers. Various activities will help children to express themselves, and will enable them to recreate or to act out what is going on now, to invent and try out solutions, eventually to fight the illness. The way in which families receive psychological support will be specific each time and will have to avoid two stumbling blocks: the pre-established knowledge of what has to be said, and the possible idea that efficient action could put an end to the feeling of powerlessness.
