Abstract

Telomerase (TERT), a specialized reverse transcriptase, mediates maintenance of telomere length and is closely associated with cellular proliferation capacity. Because disordered cell division and cell enlargement are crucial events for symptom development with citrus canker, the involvement of telomerase in the disease was tested. Southern analysis using probes of AtTERT confirmed that citrus has its homolog as a single copy. The telomeric repeat amplification protocol assay revealed that the telomerase activity was induced specifically in citrus leaves infected with Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri but not in mock-inoculated leaves, indicating a possible role for telomerase in citrus canker development.
