Abstract
Several studies in recent years have provided increasing evidence that etiologically otherwise unexplained late onset seizures in older patients can represent the first clinical manifestation of an underlying cerebrovascular disease. These epileptic seizures could be regarded as biomarkers for vascular diseases; they could increase the risk of a subsequent stroke and other vascular events, including myocardial infarction. In these patients it therefore seems advisable to investigate the presence of risk factors for vascular diseases and to take preventive treatment into consideration to reduce the risk of clinically overt vascular events.
