Abstract
Processes underlying epileptic activity have been studied in a model nervous system (buccal ganglia of Helix pomatia). Many series of experiments have shown that epileptiform activity in the model nervous system is comparable to the epileptic activity in the human nervous system. The following mechanisms were found: epileptiform activity is mainly non-synaptic. PDS may be labelled as “giant pacemaker potentials” which are generated by the single neurons. They synchronize via unspecific (non-synaptic) exocytosis of intracellular substances from somata and dendrites of the epileptically active neurons to somata and dendrites of neighboring neurons which are not (yet) epileptically active. Phosphorylation and dephosphorylation contribute to the spontaneous termination of epileptiform activity. The present article contains experimental observations concerning these statements.
