Reisen und Epilepsie

Abstract

With increasing mobility, more and more people with epilepsy travel (long distance). Careful travel planning can avoid possible medical and legal difficulties. Things to consider in the context of epilepsy and (long distance) travel include the continuation of regular medication and the prevention of seizures due to sleep deprivation associated with travel to a different time zone, particular considerations with regard to vaccinations and anti-malarial medication, the risk of falling ill at the destination (problems with transfer home, medical treatment, health insurance, poor absorption of anticonvulsants in diarrheal illnesses), travel restrictions of airlines for people with epilepsy, and risks associated with the participation in sports and leisure activities at the destination. Neurologists should consider collaborating with specialists in travel and tropical medicine when they are faced with complex travel issues.

Zusammenfassung

Mit zunehmender Mobilität werden (Fern)Reisen auch von Menschen mit Epilepsie häufiger realisiert. Eine vorausschauende Planung der Reise kann dabei medizinische und rechtliche Probleme meiden helfen. Besonderheiten einer (Fern)Reise im Kontext der Epilepsieerkrankung sind u.a. das Fortführen der Dauermedikation (Zeitverschiebung), die Prophylaxe von Schlafentzug (bei Zeitverschiebung), Besonderheiten der Reiseimpfungen und der Malariaprophylaxe, die Gefahr einer Erkrankung am Reiseort (mit Problem des Rücktransports und der ärztlichen Behandlung bei unzureichender Versicherung, Malabsorption der Antiepileptika bei Diarrhoe), die Beschränkung der Transportbedingungen von Fluggesellschaften und die Gefährdungen durch Sportarten am Urlaubsort. Die Zusammenarbeit mit Ärzten für Tropen- oder Reisemedizin sollte bei solchen Fragestellungen vom Neurologen etabliert werden.
