Abstract
The aim of aesthetic endocrinology is to improve the skin quality and slow down skin ageing. Prevention of the ageing process by hormone substitution is a therapeutic concept that has not been yet thoroughly investigated. Postmenopausal hormone substitution leads to improvement of the skin barrier and skin quality through preservation of the dermal collagen content; cicatrization, cutaneous circulation and hair quality also benefit. Postmenopausal women respond well to hormone substitution when substitution is administered from the beginning of menopause. Topical retinoids are another effective anti-aging agent substance group. Vitamins C and E exhibit a photoprotective effect; however, they do not exhibit a high protection level. Isoflavones express numerous biological effects but their position as an oestrogen alternative has not been yet proven. Systemic anti-androgens are effective in the treatment of moderate acne vulgaris and hirsutism. There is no indication for the therapy of aged skin using growth hormones.
