Abstract

Vitex agnus castus extracts contain dopaminergic compounds which, chemically speaking, belong to the diterpenes. They have mild D2 receptor agonistic properties that are able to inhibit latent hyperprolactinemia. Latent hyperprolactinemia may be the cause of premenstrual mastodynia and corpus luteum defects. Similar results were obtained with synthetic dopaminergic drugs; however, these drugs have severe side effects, whereas no adverse effects were observed under treatment with vitex agnus castus extracts.
