Abstract
Traditional Chinese medicine (CM) is a vegetative treatment system that includes various other therapeutic options apart from acupuncture, which is very widespread in Germany and other western countries. Following the special Chinese diagnosis, these treatments may be administered as a single or combined treatment and can be modified during further treatment. In western countries, acupuncture is often based on a western indication only without considering the Chinese diagnosis and without further adaptation to the changing Chinese diagnosis during the course of therapy. This western standardisation in education and practical application without considering modern scientific hypotheses of Chinese medical theories may be suitable for conducting trials but does not take into account the advantage of adding a complementary concept to our treatment strategies. After an introduction to the Heidelberg model of Chinese medicine, a summary of common Chinese diagnoses in sterility and menopause is given; the available evidence from published trials is presented followed by recommendations both for practical applications and for further research.
