Diagnosis disclosure by radiologists: between transparency and opacity

Résumé

L’annonce d’un cancer représente une difficulté particulière pour le radiologue, puisqu’il ne peut en atténuer les effets par une stratégie thérapeutique. La transparence de l’information, exigée par la loi, évoque celle de l’imagerie médicale. Le radiologue devra pourtant situer son acte d’énonciation dans une position humaine, soutenue par un questionnement éthique sur l’impact de cette annonce.

Abstract

Cancer diagnosis disclosure represents a particular challenge for radiologists because they cannot offer therapeutic strategies that can ease acceptance. Transparency in providing information, which is stipulated by law, means communicating the details of medical imaging. Radiologists must, nonetheless, disclose results with sensitivity, taking into account ethical issues regarding the impact the disclosure.
