Abstract
Pain due to slipped disc can reach a very high intensity and needs a suitable pharmacological treatment.
An hypothetical step-up treatment of musculoskeletal pain addresses symptoms caused by slipped disc. This treatment, according to WHO guidelines, should start with non-pharmacological treatments followed by or associated with acetaminophene alone or associated to other agents. If there is no response, it is possible to use NSAIDs at increasing doses, alone or associated, local or systemic steroids and, in non-responder cases, weak or strong opioids alone or associated with other medication. Various pharmacological therapies are analyzed (analgesics, NSAIDs, steroids, opioids, anticonvulsivants and vitaminic complexes) showing indications, contraindications and treatment schemes.
Pharmacological therapy in slipped disc is rich but also insidious. Using effective therapies needs a lot of experience. A correct diagnosis and a rapid change in therapeutical strategy according to patient response are mandatory.
